What Music Cannot Be Distributed to Stores? Critical Fingerprint Guidelines

DISTROM Editorial May 30, 2026

Delivering content to platforms and Fingerprint systems (like YouTube Content ID, Facebook/Instagram, and TikTok) is strictly regulated by international intellectual property laws and internal DSP guidelines. To qualify for these automatic scanning stores, the label or artist must own 100% of the exclusive commercial copyrights over the master recording and all its components.

Below are details of the types of recordings that do not qualify and must not be sent under any distribution plan to protect your account history:

1. Non-Exclusive Elements and Common Licenses

  • Loops, Samples, and Purchased Beats: Sounds, instrumental bases, or loops downloaded or purchased on platforms like Splice, Looperman, or Beatstars under non-exclusive licenses. If another artist can buy and use the same sound, the song is disqualified for fingerprint systems.
  • DAW Libraries: Sound effects or loops provided by default in audio editing programs like Logic Pro, GarageBand, FL Studio, or Ableton Live.
  • AI-Generated Audio: Tracks created by AI music generators (Suno, Udio, etc.) under public or non-exclusive licenses.

2. Common Recordings and Stock Sounds

  • Nature and Ambient Sounds: Rain, birds singing, ocean waves, white noise, laughter, applause, or generic effects.
  • Functional Music: Tracks dedicated to meditation, yoga, deep relaxation, ASMR, or sleep sounds.
  • Public Domain Recordings: Recordings of classical compositions or old recordings whose economic rights have expired under the laws of your country.

3. Third-Party Recordings and Media Formats

  • Karaoke Tracks and Sound-alike Covers: Instrumental recordings designed to closely mimic existing popular songs.
  • Spoken Word and Multimedia: Lectures, speeches, religious prayers, audiobooks, podcasts, or recordings of radio broadcasts.
  • Video Game and Cinema Audio: Movie sound effects, dialogues extracted from series, or direct soundtracks from third-party video games.

The pre-review process

At DISTROM, our intelligent scanning engine analyzes each uploaded audio file. If common samples or non-exclusive loops are detected, the release will go to manual review by our technical team in English before being processed, protecting your releases from potential legal disputes in stores.
